5 Most Impressive Cricket Stadiums in India

15 Apr 2022

With millions of fans chanting the names of their favourite teams every week, cricket is the biggest Indian sport beyond a shadow of a doubt.

They do so at magnificent stadiums built specifically for the sport.

Below you can see a top-5 list of the most impressive cricket stadiums cricket fans simply must visit - even if you prefer online cricket betting you should still visit these stadiums!

Sardar Patel Stadium, Gujarat

Constructed in 1983, the Sardar Patel Stadium in Gujarat is the largest in India and the second largest in the world.

It has a whopping seating capacity of 110,000 which even trusts popular stadiums such as FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou. Spread across 63 acres, the Sardar Patel stadium is a technological marvel. It has an Olympic-sized swimming pool and unique LED lights on the roof in place of the usual floodlights.

These lights are installed on an antibacterial and fire-proof roof designed by Walter P Moore.

Thanks to its features and seating capacity, it was picked as the site for American President Donald Trump’s visit with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in early 2020.

Eden Gardens, Kolkata

If there’s an Indian cricket stadium that’s considered holy ground, it is Eden Gardens. Located in Kolkata, it was established over a century ago in 1864.

As such, it is the oldest cricket stadium in India and the second largest next to Sardar Patel. Eden Gardens easily trumps it, though, thanks to many memorable moments over the years.

Home venue of the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Bengal national team, Eden Gardens truly is a sanctuary for the sport. Up to now, it has hosted test, T20, and ODI matches as well as international competitions such as the World Cup, Asia Cup, and World Twenty20.

There are 66,000 seats in the stadium spread on its iconic circular base. Both the shape and its historical significance make Eden Gardens a true Eden for Indian cricket fans.

Raipur International Cricket Stadium, Naya Raipur

The third-largest cricket stadium in India and fourth-largest in the world is located in Naya Raipur in the state of Chhattisgarh.

It opened in 2008 and has a seating capacity of 65,000. The first match played at the Raipur International Cricket Stadium was hosted in 2010 between Canada and the Chhattisgarh national team.

Since then, it went on to become a second home venue for the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League. Although it is commonly known as the Raipur International Stadium, its official name is Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium. It was named after Veer Narayan Singh, a local landlord who led the 1857 war of Indian Independence in the state.

The beautiful oval cricket field has seen plenty of action in the past decade and is one of the most popular in the country.

New VCA, Nagpur

The Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, also known as new VCA, is the largest cricket stadium in India by field area.

It’s also one of the most iconic cricket grounds, hosting the most T20 cricket matches than any other stadium.

Home of the Duleep and Ranji Trophy tournaments, new VCA has a seating capacity of 60,000.It is operated by the Vidarbha Cricket Association and was opened in 2008.

Since then, it has hosted dozens of T20s, 9 ODIs, and half a dozen Tests, making it one of the most popular cricket grounds in the Asian country.

Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

With a seating capacity of 45,000, the Wankhede Stadium isn’t the largest in India.

However, it holds a special place in the heart of Indian cricket fans as it was the final venue for the 2011 Cricket World Cup Final in which India defeated Sri Lanka. In doing so, the team became the first country to win the cup on home soil.

This is also the stadium where the legendary Sachin Tendulkar waved goodbye to international cricket. Ravi Shastri hit 6 sixes in an over here as well, so it’s no wonder why the Wankhede Stadium is the favourite of many cricket fans.
